Mr Kaushik Chakrabarty FRCS(Plast)

Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon

Biography

I am a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon. I graduated in medicine from Manchester University, and after my first year as a doctor worked at Oxford University as an anatomy prosector, before pursuing my basic surgical training in Oxford and Surrey.

Having gained FRCS, I gained experience as a registrar in orthopaedic surgery, working in different units throughout the country, before undertaking a 2 year period of research at the University of Sheffield, obtaining my MD in skin composite development. I was then appointed into the Plastic Surgery Registrar Training scheme between Manchester and Sheffield.

As a senior trainee I spent time in higher surgical training in the North West in hand surgery, and in Toronto at the Hospital for Sick Children, where I pursued my interest in Paediatric plastic surgery including facial re-animation and microsurgery. I returned to the UK, working for a full year in Sheffield, in breast surgery. I completed my FRCS(Plast) and entered the GMC Specialist Register in 2006.

I worked as a Consultant in plastic surgery for almost 5 years in London, before returning to my home, here in the North West of England, working at Wythenshawe Hospital from 2012.

I have visited India to refresh my experience in the management of complex, major trauma. My interests are described above , but I particularly enjoy hand surgery and complex reconstruction, in adults and children.

I am currently completing my dissertation towards an MCh in aesthetic surgery. I am involved in assisting the development of plastic surgery services in North Manchester, with the aim of improving the scope of current elective services available to the population and also to develop further avenues of specialisation and links with other surgical specialties, such as General Surgery, Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery, where plastic surgery involvement can be seen to have a beneficial outcome for patients.
